Update

October 27th, 2007

Hello. Things are quite hectic with me these days. As some of you may know, I have been forced to work the oll 40-hour work week grind, and with it the ol’ 1-hour back-and-forth commute.  But nonetheless, Fiction on Demand continues rolling along.

Now for the good news–We have added the exciting literary journal from the California Institute of the Arts, Black Clock, to our list of magazines! Check it out! It’s worth looking, they are publishing some great material, only seven issues out!

Fiction on Demand in June

June 12th, 2007

I’ve settled into my new home in Tampa, Florida. Goecart refuses to refund my money, which is terrible news because I have paid up through March 2007. That’s terrible business, to not even offer a refund when you drop the ball that badly.

Anyway, I invite you to subscribe to a magazine. And please, help out by reporting any bugs or problems.

New Hosting

May 30th, 2007

We’ve done it! We are live again with reliable and secure order processing through Bluehost. Some products may not be available yet, but everything should work fine. Once again, please email us if you have any problems with the order process.

Catastrophe on Order Processing

May 10th, 2007

Imagine if you will you own a restaurant in a city far away. One day you look at your bank statement and notice that the deposits for the month are $0. Your Gross profits are $0. So you call the manager you have hired and you discover that for an entire month he had never unlocked the doors, never opened for business. This is what my web hosting company has done to Fiction on Demand.
On April 16 when we switched to the “new” software with the shopping cart provider (Goecart), they failed to correctly set it up. Failed in a most simple and fundamental way. A few weeks went by before I tested with a new account and discovered the error (no place to enter credit card CVV). This was May 2. On May 3 the provider called and said it was fixed. On May 11 I tested again, now quite dubious of any claims Goecart ever makes, and yes, it STILL did not work. So for all of you trying to place orders, I apologize on their behalf.
In March 2006 when I launched Fiction on Demand, I selected Goecart amongst several providers, a tedious process to say the least. I truly hoped I was offering Fiction on Demand Partner Magazines the best possible service, secure transactions, dedicated support, 99% uptime. Goecart had one simple task–take credit cards–and they could not fulfill this, the most core competency of their business model. Hundreds of dollars have been lost on advertising, credit card gateway fees, and untold sums on the overall reputation of Fiction on Demand. Given the exceptionally high cost of hosting that Goecart charges, this catastrophe becomes especially perplexing, and, sadly, possibly insurmountable for this fledgling home business.
If Fiction on Demand hopes to recover from this loss it will take some serious refunding from Goecart in a good-faith measure of compensation for lost revenue because otherwise Fiction on Demand will be forced do go down that bleak road of tortious interferece of contract.  This may result in downtime, but as President and Founder of Fiction on Demand, I promise my Partner Magazines and readers to do my very best to overcome this setback. Should Goecart decide to return my phone calls and address this issue, I can begin the process of migrating Fiction on Demand to a new web hosting provider.

The 2nd Hand

March 24th, 2007

Today I have launched the Fiction on Demand “blog” as a source for News and updates related to the website. I considered devising an elaborate metaphor to justify the use of the Sonora desert panorama to the right, but it’s really just a pretty picture I took. Notice the clouds, yes, there was a thunderstorm in the desert that day, it did a great deal to change the light composition of the pictures I took.
We are now offering lifetime subscriptions to The 2nd Hand. For $30 you can have this slick broadside delivered to your door. It features eclectic artwork, quality fiction, and the periodic miscellany article.

Back from AWP, Ploughshares Price Drop

March 3rd, 2007

Ploughshares is now available for a “Web Discount” over its normal subscription price. Several magazines expressed interest in distribution through Fiction on Demand. Sadly, I had some delays and other aggravations at the Atlanta airport that resulted in the loss of my primary binder and all of my notes and contact information, save a handful of business cards. Nonetheless, I push forward with an audacious plan to increase the breadth of magazine offerings available through Fiction on Demand and push for greater exposure through advertising an marketing!

Off for AWP

February 25th, 2007

Each spring  the Association of Writers and Writing Conferences hosts a conference for Colleges and Universities that sponsor writing programs and literary magazines. Last year, an inchoate Fiction on Demand debuted its services to several literary magazines at the AWP Bookfair. This year, as Fiction on Demand’s intrepid founder and president, I expect to invite several quality publications to list their magazine on Fiction on Demand.
